Yin Yoga

What is Yin Yoga?

If we look around, we often find Yang energy in our world today. The Yang shows up in the frantic, fast-paced environment we live in. This includes multiple jobs, raising a family, personal and business commitments, and our attachment to the flickering lights of our devices. This even extends into our Yin time as we work late into the evening. So how do we disconnect and nourish the calm, cooling Yin in our daily activities? Part of this answer may lie in a Yin yoga practice.

We often focus on our musculature via various forms of movement including most forms of yoga. However, Yin is a branch of yoga that focuses on the connective tissue within the body. We aim to stress the fascia with the weight of our body to nourish and remove restrictions within the connective tissue. This allows for increased flexibility and improved mobility when we do ask more of our muscles.

How Does Yin Yoga Work?

We place our attention on sensations in specific body regions rather than “perfect” posture. We also hold the positions for longer times which allows for a more meditative aspect to this practice. While this can be challenging to many people, it can nourish and strengthen the Yin energy we need for optimal health.
